2001 Sportsman & Sportswoman of the Year

SILVER SPRING, MD - Terence PARKIN of South Africa and Veronika GOUSKOVA of Russia have been selected as the 2001 Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year by the 9-member CISS Selections Commission through electronic ballot, by earning 153 and 134 points respectively.

Terence PARKIN, born on 12/04/1980 and a 2000 Sydney Olympic Games silver medalist , continued with his phenomenal performance at the 2001 Deaflympic Games in Rome in July. Terence set 2 world records and 4 Deaflympic Games records in swimming with a total of 5 gold medals. Against top swimmers in the world, Terence won his favorite event-200 meter breaststroke at the World Series swimming event held in Australia during August/September 2001.

Veronika GOUSKOVA, born on 04/05/1984, swam at the 2001 Deaflympic Games in Rome and brought home a total of 7 medals: 5 gold and 1 silver and 1 bronze. The gold medals were for 400m Medley, 100m Butterfly, 4x100 Free, 4x200 Medley. The silver was for 200 m Medley and the bronze was for 400m Free.
