Biography on Martin Bogard, Badminton Technical Director

Martin Bogard is CISS's newly appointed Badminton Technical Director.

Bogard is profoundly deaf and attended Burwood Park School for the deaf in Surrey, England. He began playing badminton seriously at a hearing college near the school when he was a 16 year-old student. This was how he discovered his love for this sport. When he left the college he immediately joined the best hearing badminton club with so many high-standard players near where he used to live in Ilford, Essex. At that time, Bogard wondered why there was no badminton in the Deaflympics (formerly World Games for the Deaf) it was finally formed several years later in 1985 in Los Angeles.

Bogard's achievements/honors were as following:

  • World Games 1985 Los Angeles, USA - 1 Gold + 2 Silvers
  • 1989 Christchurch, New Zealand - 1 Silver + 1 Bronze
  • 1993 Sofia, Bulgaria - 1 Bronze
  • 1997 Copenhagen, Denmark - 1 Silver + 1 Bronze
  • 2001 Rome, Italy- Fourth place
  • European 1990 Manchester, England - 2 Gold + 1 Silver + 1 Bronze
  • 1994 Copenhagen, Denmark - 2 Gold + 1 Silver
  • 1998 Haarlem, Holland - 1 Gold + 1 Silver + 1 Bronze
  • 2002 Basle, Switzerland (6 to 12 October) TBA

Bogard played for Essex County veteran over 40 years category and reached the national final twice. He has also been involved in coaching some deaf and hearing players. Now he has decided to retire after 27 years since he first played internationally in Copenhagen when he was 19 years old!
